Check digit
Civil (EGN) and legal (EIK) check digits exist but depend on number length and type; not enforced (false rejects on 9-vs-10 edge cases).
Vatline does not reject on this check. Only the structure is enforced, so a format-valid number can still turn out to be unregistered. Rejecting a genuine customer costs more than one extra lookup.
Watch out for
- Variable length: a fixed 9-digit regex rejects valid 10-digit numbers.
- VIES returns Bulgarian company names in Cyrillic, not transliterated. Do not expect Latin script.
